Nobody has ever suggested that the Italian actress Sophia Loren (born the 20th of September 1934) wasn't a busty lady. How could they when she in her looks came very, very close to embodying the main female ideal of the 1950-1960'ies? That ideal was to be "curvy": Big breasts and full hips with a tiny waist, and all of that she was able to boast. Everything was in its place, so to speak, but I'm not sure that she was right when she said she owed it all to spaghetti.
Anyway, Sophia was a world-famous movie star even before she met her American colleague, Jayne Mansfield (1933-1967), in Beverly Hills at the exclusive Romanoff's restaurant in 1957.
That meeting gave rise to its own legends, when one of the photographers took a photo of these two busty ladies, and Sophia was caught glancing - or staring? - at the breasts of Jayne.
Later on, she said that she was afraid that they might escape the dress of Jayne and thus give vent to a scandal, but the truth is that she looked utterly shocked which by many people was seen as envy as if she felt "out-busted" by the American star. As a bust being the key to a movie career in those days, it wasn't all that farfetched to interpret her side glance as a signal of envy, but what did she have to be envious about? Nothing!!!!
However, the peak time of the busty female stars was nearing its end with the birth of a new female beauty ideal. I think it started in 1953 when Audrey Hepburn gained fame with "Roman Holiday". She became the very first actress to win an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award and a BAFTA Award for a single performance. In that same year, she also won a Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Play for her performance on "Ondine" without boasting a bust. On the contrary ....
