When Florence Irene Ford contracted Yellow Fever and died in 1871 she was only ten years old. Her mother was inconsoleable and her deep sorrow was the reason for the strange grave in which her daughter was buried. Little Florence Irene had been terrified of storms and rough weather so her mother wanted to be able to comfort her, even though she was dead in her grave. That's why she had the grave built with a staircase which gave her the opportunity always to feel near her dead daughter.
Not only was there a staircase, but the child was buried in a casket with a glass window. Howeveer, by now the casket is being protected by a concrete wall so that vandals can't get to it.
